I was one of those who never read this as a child. I'm almost sorry I didn't. I had my reasons, not good ones, seeing as I owned a copy. But I was so little back then and I judged the book by its giver, whom I had every reason to dislike. Perhaps if I had read it back then, I would have had a different opinion of it.

In fifth grade, every day after lunch our teacher would read a book to us. And this was how I first experienced the Hobbit - as a book read aloud to a room full of fifth and sixth graders of various reading interests and ability who were suddenly quiet and interested. And so I asked for the whole set for Christmas, and Santa so provided.

Better 2nd time around. Really don't like what they have done with the movie. Could we have any MORE of the pale ork in the movie? Geez.
