I found myself hoping for things to get better for Kino and Juana, who both really seemed like good people. This is a very cynical story about human nature and how sudden fortune can bring with it great misfortune. This is a great short story to read every few years. What I like about the descent of Kino is that he does not recognize that it is happening until things have gotten very much out of hand. This seems to be true for many people. I am currently studying pacing and point of view to see how much I am allowed to do with the omniscient point of view in the series I am writing and how authors handle pacing at the start of a novel.
