Often, we hear of objects that are said to be cursed. They destroy everything that touches them. Things of the greatest value often have the bloodiest histories.
The Pearl is a retelling of a Mexican folktale that talks of one such object. Kino finds a huge pearl and expects it to fetch a good sum.
