Often, we hear of objects that are said to be cursed. They destroy everything that touches them. Things of the greatest value often have the bloodiest histories.
The Pearl is a retelling of a Mexican folktale that talks of one such object. Kino finds a huge pearl and expects it to fetch a good sum. At just 84 pages this is a powerful little book, easily read in one session. So many important messages, but never preachy. Steinbeck is a brilliant writer and a favourite of mine.
