This book has the best opening chapter that I've ever read. The narrative of the dust spreading across the land was hauntingly beautiful. It is unbelievable that a family would pack up their entire household (including more than a dozen family members) into an old jalopy and drive across a vast desert based on the promises of a printed handbill. I know this is a classic and I have thoroughly enjoyed Steinbeck's writing style, however it was difficult for me to focus on the story and actually finish. ...more

I am generally a fan of Steinbeck and I started reading this with the sense that East of Eden was one of the best American novels out there; Steinbeck, consequently, one of the best American novelists. I was somewhat disappointed, though, that this was the book to win the Pulitzer and not East of Eden, which I think is the superior novel for a variety of reasons.

I really liked this book. I read several of his in a row. East of Eden and Mice and Men. Also very good. Sad though...
