While I give this book the 5 star rating because it was indeed amazing, I understand now why others have called it "so depressing". My two positive takeaways were 1) don't prejudge and malign the Okies, which was still happening when I moved to California in 1975, and 2)good people helping each other is our salvation. Unfortunately the second takeaway gets trampled by self interest, particularly when survival is at stake. But some people will rise to the occasion nonetheless.

I know this is a classic and I have thoroughly enjoyed Steinbeck's writing style, however it was difficult for me to focus on the story and actually finish.

I am generally a fan of Steinbeck and I started reading this with the sense that East of Eden was one of the best American novels out there; Steinbeck, consequently, one of the best American novelists. I was somewhat disappointed, though, that this was the book to win the Pulitzer and not East of Eden, which I think is the superior novel for a variety of reasons.
