One of the sweetest books I have ever read and I feel confident that if I had read this as a youth, I would have also said it was one of the most influential books upon my life. Set at the beginning of the 20th century in immigrant-rich Brooklyn, the novel is the coming of age story of Francie Nolan as she deals with poverty and alcoholism as she tries to become part of the immigrant dream of achieving an education. Wonderful, wonderful story. Definitely should be read by all!

Classic novel set in the early part of the 20th century. Francie and Sissy are among the most indelible characters in American literature, at least in this reviewer's opinion. Poignant coming-of-age novel and love letter to Brooklyn.

I absolutely loved this as a child. I identified with Francie--her poverty-stricken family, her love of learning, and her wistful hopes and dreams. As an adult, I see the family's dysfunction more clearly, and I no longer view her beloved father through Francie's eyes.
