I have to say I almost gave this three stars instead of four...I had read this in high school and remembered really liking it. I recently saw the 1934 film with Leslie Howard and thought I would enjoy a reread. Although I liked the story very much, the writing was cheesier than I remembered it, and I had apparently forgotten the horrifyingly anti-Semitic scene at the end, which may have been not unacceptable in 1908, but which is cringe-inducing today.
