While this is one of my favorite books of all time, I can understand why some would rate this an unthinkable one-star. It has to be read in the context of when it was written - a time when racial inequality was prevalent and, unfortunately, accepted by some. Today, with the changing attitudes towards race, the book's racial epithets can mark it as "racist." But that would be missing the point. Life lessons learned by the precocious Scout and Jem are centered around the moral integrity of Atticus

I originally started reading this book because it was a classic that it seemed like everyone in the world had read and recommended (at least on Goodreads). I actually wasn't that turned on by it when I started reading thinking that it would just be another book about racism. I was converted. I really ended up loving this book and its story.
