While this is one of my favorite books of all time, I can understand why some would rate this an unthinkable one-star. It has to be read in the context of when it was written - a time when racial inequality was prevalent and, unfortunately, accepted by some. Today, with the changing attitudes towards race, the book's racial epithets can mark it as "racist." But that would be missing the point. To everyone who gave this a negative critique you most understand the quality of Lee's writing. I believe that the author does an exceptional job of cleverly writing this novel from a child's point of view something that may not come easily for an aged adult. So in a sense we are reading Scout's childhood memoir that's is fantastically written by Lee.
