This was my first work by Joyce - a collection of 14 short stories & 1 novella. They are stories of people living in and around Dublin. I found the tone of almost all these stories melancholic. The characters seem to be trapped and can’t get out of their situations even if they want to.
I admit I didn’t understand all of them. I’ll revisit them someday with a guide to gain more insight. Some of my favourites were The Boarding House, Eveline, A Painful Case and The Dead.

Joyce receives a lot of grief for this set of short stories, but I found them fascinating. I've studied the book three separate times, all in different literature classes. His use of paralysis and gnomon makes Joyce one of the most original and remarkable writers of his generation. His story "The Dead" was especially captivating. I loved the insight into the human memory and what we take away from experiences, and how they shape who we are in the future. My favorite line - "soul swooned slowly". ...more
