A femme fatale goes to Spain with four men who are in love with her. She sleeps with two of them. All the men hate the Jewish one bc how dare he. The main character cant sleep with her because of a wartime injury. They all get drunk all the time. Crises in masculinity. Casual antisemitism. Drunken fistfights. Bullfights. I read this book in college and kind of struggled through it. This time around I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cadence of the language is beautiful and fits the tempo that one would expect from Jake Barnes. In college, I was instructed to focus on the aficion and what it means to be an aficionado. While this is important, I found the interpersonal relationships and the fall of each person's facade far more intriguing. I was stunned at the end of the book, in Part Three, when Brett tells us her age.

Quite enjoyed the read. I haven't looked at all of the imagery yet but the story was intriguing enough. I found it slow at first, but the human psychology is brought up endlessly.
