I was surprised how modern, in some ways, this book felt, with its lengthy psychological character analyses. I enjoyed it but only gave it three stars because the ending was extremely contrived and unbelievable. Oddly, the back cover of my ancient paperback tries to make it sound as if this is a mystery or horror novel, and it REALLY isn't.

I hated The Scarlet Letter when I first read it. Hawthorne never met a run-on sentence he didn't like. However, knowing that, I was better prepared to read this book and I really liked it. An ancient family curse, a love story, a ghost story, a grumpy spinster...what more do you need? 62/1,001
