I loved it (and by love I meant to say, in an oddly ironic way) that, at the end, Mr Gibson has quarantined his house against scarlet fever ridden Hamley Hall and I'm pretty sure the following dialogue ensues:
Roger: CAN I GO VISIT
Mr Gibson: NO, FUCK OFF
Roger: Come onnnnnnn, I'm going back to Africa, and I might get killed by the native people who are hungry for some white European coloniser blood because we have been ravaging their land for ages and they're super angry

Wives and Daughters is a wonderful book. Gaskell's characters are brilliantly diverse and full of interesting contrasts and the themes are developed so well throughout the book. I was sad that Gaskell had not finished the book although the ending still hints at a satisfying conclusion and I was sad to finish reading this one.
