seldom has any other book made me move to tears and fascinated me so much. i have had a long standing relationship with classics and gaskell is a new addition . and frankly i wonder how it took so long. she writes her books without the normal elaboration of human characters or the surroundings as was done during that time by dickens, hardy, austen etc.. so the books were quiet fast to read and easy too.but oh so charming.and they caught everything as they should be ie. quite perfectly..
