A perfect afternoon is to read The Great Gatsby aloud with students, then let the rhythms of Fitzgerald flow through me as I walk in the waves of Jericho, allowing the imagery of nature to culminate into writing my own novels. Being immersed in Fitzgerald's patterns of language inevitably unlocks the creative and passionate word play in all of us.

The crown jewel of the jazz age, Gatsby is a dazzling tale that combines expert writing with a story worth telling. Out of my favourite time and place in history (Paris, 1920s) Fitzgerald fills our eyes with gold in his career defining novel. It's like Fitzgerald invented the over-theatrical, image driven style of book that, while not a genre of its own, is my personal favourite. With a permanent place on my favourites shelf, I will re-read this beloved classic forever.
