I love the title of the book taken from Macbeth. The following lines from Macbeth really are the crux of Faulkner's characters' fates.
"Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."

This is the tale of the fall and fall of the former aristocratic family of Compsons as we follow the (mis)fortunes of four of its members.
