You see, I think I should stop reading the descriptions of classics. For some reason, they quite happily spoil plot points that don't even show up until halfway through the book. In the case of Silas Marner, this is just a brief little novel, but I still kept waiting for some child to show up, which was promised to me as instrumental to its plot.
It was not. I think Silas Marner is best described as a short book that's fascinated with community, and social standing within a small country village. ...more

This book is deceptively good and so very sweet. It took me a few tries to get used to the writing style, (sometimes the classics are hard after you've been reading modern fictions) but it's worth every page. This is a book that is better read as an adult (bonus if you have kids) to really understand all that's going on. I'll re-read this one some day for the sheer enjoyment. 😊35/1,001

Silas Marner is a moving story of a man who lost everything and is brought back to happiness and fulfillment by reaching out to others around him. The gentry worrying about who marries whom was a bit dry, but it didn't take up much of the story. All the conflicts are resolved in the end, but not in the ways I expected. The dialect was a but tricky at first, but it didn't detract from the story. In fact it added to it. The lower classes are the true heroes in this story, as in real life.
