Abridged books should be banned.(I'd read and not been much impressed with that version before) This was my foremost thought after starting with this adventure.
It was a wonderful read, full of wit and wisdom, packed with adventure, duels, political intrigue, jolly debauchery and suchlike. 16th century France was an exciting but dangerous place to be, especially if one were involved in politics and religion c.f. It has taken me weeks to post this! Meanwhile, I've been grumbling about this book in my groups. I finished it, and didn't hate it, but it bothered me. In fact I nearly chucked it across the room a few times, but as a rule I do not finish books that I don't believe are worth my time. This one was. This a long, but fun, book. It's a fairly light romp and very much a "guy's" book (IMHO), with much sword play, gratuitou

I thought that I would enjoy this one more than I did. It was very clever, but just did not pull me in. The characters are certainly memorable. I do not think I have ever seen a more evil woman than Milady! She was the ultimate villain!

It took me a little while to get to the juicy part, but once I was tuned in it just kept getting better. A memorable read.
