This is one of the best books I have ever read. So well written, and filled with all that makes a book great - love, hatred, goodness, betrayal, forgiveness, revenge. What story-telling! It is a long book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and was sorry it had to end. Be sure you get the unabridged version.

Reading The Count of Monte Cristo was very much like watching a few seasons of a prime time TV drama -- maybe along the lines of Downton Abbey. It's a very easy, enjoyable read, at times melodramatic. The main theme seems to be "some people are awful", not unlike prime time soap operas. I'm not a huge fan of vengeance, though I suppose (spoiler alert) some of the regret about collateral damage near the end of the book moves towards balancing that aspect of our hero's motivation.
