Ok, so I read this a second time (the Constance Garnett translation) and this time I didn't have to keep a notebook in order to make out three brothers out of what seemed more like 12 bros. much easier to follow the narrative...

So: there is the idiot/dilettante academic Ivan, the idiot/saint Alyosha and idiot/player/drunkard Dimitri (Mitja), sons of the buffoon & semi-sociopath Fyodor Karamazov. The sons mothers' have died early of consumption or brain fever like everybody does in Dostoyevsky's

I was extremely intrigued by much of the book and can even understand how it falls in with the other "classics." I was extremely confused by a lot of delving into characters and what it really had to do with the story Dostoyevsky was trying to tell. For instance, what was all of that about the dying monk? I probably could have gone in for the condensed version of this one...egad. Most of the story was fascinating and I found myself very engaged in the "whodunnit." I just kept finding myself lost ...more

Hands down one of my favorite books ever. Not my favorite though but definitely in the top 20. I read it on the beach in Costa Rica on my honeymoon
