One of the best novels in English ever. Amusingly enough I was just reading Charlotte Bronte's Selected Letters and while she liked the opening Chancery section (dramatic!) she didn't like Summerson at all and considered her narration 'twaddle.' Heh.

I was very torn between 4 and 5 stars until the end of this book. It took me six weeks to finish--this is usually a sign of boredom on my part, even when the book is long. I will concede that I slogged through parts of Dickens's admittedly charming descriptive passages (dialogue I almost always got through fast). Star ratings are very individual, and I figured that was it, no five stars for this one. Too bad, as many people I greatly respect count this as a favorite.
