I think this is J.K. Rowling's best kept million pound secret which has been staring us for a long time. An orphan story that is too good to be true. A boy so innocent in a savage ruthless world. A dead mother's act of protection for her son. A set of people committed to protect the helpless lad beset by evils episodically. The evil is the scheme of a villain bent on the death of the orphan, Monks is also as depraved, diseased as one would imagine Voldemort. Bill Sikes and Fagin are just as evil ...more

The first third was the sharpest writing. The middle dragged on until the heavy handed conclusion. The end catching of Bill is dramatic in extreme. Not bad for my first Dickens outside of Great Expectations.
