I somehow got this far into my life without reading Great Expectations, and now I'm not really sure how. It was awesome. It's easily one of the best classics on all the basic levels. Strong plot, interesting characters, great writing (I don't understand people who don't find Dickens funny. I'm usually down for differing literary opinions, but I just think this one is objectively wrong).

Charles Dickens's work is always more readable than I expect. Like many Americans, I have a knee-jerk reaction to him based mostly on those twee British film adaptations and the maudlin sermonizing of A Christmas Carol. Also to blame is his tendency to give characters names like Mr. Pumblechook and Mr. Wopsle.
