Charles Dickens's work is always more readable than I expect. Like many Americans, I have a knee-jerk reaction to him based mostly on those twee British film adaptations and the maudlin sermonizing of A Christmas Carol. Also to blame is his tendency to give characters names like Mr. Pumblechook and Mr. Wopsle. I had already read Bleak House (and liked it quite a bit) prior to reading Great Expectations, and yet I was still surprised to find it has compelling characters, a quick-moving plot, and ...more
