Hard to get into. Very different tone than Great Expectations. Dickens puts a lot of effort into setting the bleak tone in the first section. Once it's set, you're a little depressed. It seems he resets the same scene of depravity and hunger at the beginning of each chapter before he lets the characters take the lead. This gets a little tedious. This was really hard to get in to, but it is well worth the early struggle because it is such an amazing story. I understand the French Revolution after reading this. It is truly great literature.
