I quite like Charlotte Bronte's heroine in Villette. Lucy Snow, apparently retiring, contrite and accepting of her fate is, in fact, a passionate, insecure, dreaming thinker. She watches, philosophizes, plans, and dreams. Most of her dreams seem to come to naught. Fascinating.
