Catherine Morland is your typical seventeen -year- old -girl, of the turn of the century (19th, that is). She reads too much, an illness that is sadly terminal, Gothic books are her passion and the rage of the era . Any ancient home that is eerie , ominous or sinister the young lady would enjoy seeing, if there were any in the area. Very funny and a great satire of the gothic genre. The constant mention of The Mysteries of Udolpho by the characters amused me more. Henry Tilney and Catherine Morland are my second favorite Austen's couples after Emma and George Knightley. Eleanor Tilney, Mr. Allen and the Morland's family are great side characters as well. The general provided a good tension and he served his purpose as 'villain' in the story justly. ...more

It's always enjoyable to indulge in the witticisms of Jane Austen, though this particular plot was devoid of the intricacies inherent in her other novels. ...more

I actually enjoyed this book a lot. Very interesting themes going on, especially the mocking of Gothic and romance.

I liked this a lot, it is my favourite Jane Austen novel. Maybe it's also because it has the gothic elements in it. I know the author wanted to write an "ironical" version of the gothic novel, but I liked the story for what it was. ...more
