What is there to say about Pride and Prejudice that hasn't been said in a million different ways, by a million different devoted fans and readers? I'll resist giving a synopsis of this most famous novel, not only by Austen, but also by just about any author. There really is something that we readers love about Elizabeth Bennett, with her spunky ability to zing a proud Mr. Darcy, and the brooding compassion and love demonstrated by Mr. Darcy for Elizabeth. This is definitively one of my favorite novel ever and I still consider it to be one the best ever written. Although I read it also during high-school it was not boring. It is one of those books that you could read it several times and still find new things every time. For me, at this second reading, it was striking how much humor and wit it has in the first half of the novel. It is something that perhaps I did not noticed enough and I enjoyed it very much.

First and foremost, I believe that seeing the movie (Knightly version) prior to reading the book, completely ruined the artful suspense constructed by Austen. It was also difficult to go from the billowy, caressing prose of Nabokov's Lolita to the biting, acerbic wit of Austen. I am gearing up to read another Austen(one that has not been ruined by prior movie viewing). What I found most amazing about this book is how timeless it seems to be. Remove the habits and culture of the period, and you could be reading about families and friends of today. As I read the book, I could pick out people I know whose personalities match those of Austen's characters. I could read this book again - something I rarely do!
