My one issue with this book that it was just boring.

Ambivalent. Not an immediate 5 stars for a contemporary reader. The characters as models of the human condition are so authentic, the novel really comes to a life of its own. The dialogue of the characters and the narrative, although rambling at times, start to live and breathe as if you're listening to an voiceover in a movie. An interesting look at how important marrying well was to women of this era, since they were not really allowed to support themselves.
