Pride and Prejudice in Reading the Classics

Such an elegance of style, a care, sweetness and sophistication in the use of words as I never, and might never again, witness. I don’t know if those characters could be affiliated to all the classics’ novelists as I haven’t read much in there, but till I do I will be satisfied by associating this true excellence to Jane Austen and to her alone. However, I wasn’t only mesmerized by the distinguished style of writing that I can’t but hope to learn from, the plot and the flow of the story was amazingly outstanding as well. I never ever imagined in my furthest dreams that I could enjoy a classic novel as I did enjoy this novel. What I liked most and enjoyed to the maximum while reading this novel was the attributes and features of the era Austen’s story took place in, which I might simply assume was her own era. To a large extent I wish that our society could be close to Austen’s story era, because despite some few differences, I believe that the society, or to be specific, the stories of love and how a relationship between a man and a woman that should eventually end with a happy marriage should go, are quite similar to what our religion Islam asks as to pursue. I am talking about a relationship where no secret contact between a woman and a man is made before official marriage, where everything is open and where the woman is highly valued and thought of. Moreover, I am referring to a society where sexual relations are not even thought of, unless with high discredit, outside marriage, and where the woman waits patiently and with high dignity till a respectable man gets enough courage and sense to ask for her hand and then she gets to make the decision of accepting or declining the offer. I don’t know how my fellow Muslims will think of when they read this short review but I am hopeful they will agree with me when they read the novel; and here I want to emphasize that I never meant by my words that Islam encourages all the features that was described in the novel for the society and love stories but only those I mentioned above. At the end, I highly and deeply encourage all my friends and anyone who will read this review to read this novel, especially in English, to get the same, if not more, enjoyment I got and to understand fully what my review meant. ...more
