In 1847, Charlotte Bronte's novel, Jane Eyre, was published, her sister Emily's, book also , Wuthering Heights and finally the 3rd sister, Anne's, Agnes Grey . The first two became classics, the other one, until recently, almost forgotten. An autobiographical novel with a simple plot. Poor clergyman's daughter, becomes a governess, to rich snobs, in order not to be a burden to her family. Anne is my favourtite of the Bronte sisters. She is much more worldy and realistic about life.
Agnes Grey is such a great book because it doesn't mince words. It doesn't hide the bad aspects of lives. Unlike many romance novels it tells the tale of a governess, warts and all - the father does not fall in love with Agnes (nor would she want him to), the children are not darlings, and the children don't become darlings.

A heartfelt, semi-autobiographical tale by the least known of the 3 Brontë sisters. Anne died at the youthful age of 29, not much older than the heroine of this, her first of 2 novels. Anne Grey is almost journalistic in style, written in the first person, and sharing recollections of conversations and inner thoughts and feelings. It felt familiar, and while sometimes predictable, it’s a charming and engaging read.
