Oh dear, poor ernest Agnes... She goes from pampered youngest daughter to governess on a bit of a whim, and then finds out that it's not half as easy as she thought, or at all enjoyable! Whilst I know this book was written based on AB's own experiences, she doesn't half make it hard for the reader to sympathise with Agnes, who for most of the book is just rather priggish. Oh Agnes.
I really wanted to like Agnes Grey, but the book suffered both from an aimless plot as well as thin characters, leaving only Anne Brontë's pleasant prose as a positive for this novel.
The titular Agnes becomes a governess. And then for the remainder of the book, she sits in a corner judging the people she works for, judges their children, and feels morally superior even when she very clearly shirks her duty. At some point her employer warns her to keep her daughter away from an unsuitab ...more
