Three and a half stars actually. Didn't understand the characters at all. The world was actually quite interesting, wished he would have just sticked to that and didn't throw in horrible one-dimensional characters without any redeeming qualities. ...more

I started this book in 1951 and bogged down. Recently I picked it up again as it was a read for my book club. Amazing. Orwell looked at his world and projected a dark future in which the state was all powerful. He who controls the present controls the past and he who controls the past controls the present. Sheer genius. Amazing. The fact that Orwell's method of writing transcends his own generation and can applied beyond the planned 1984 day is pure testament to the genius content of 1984! ...more
