The story's occasionally tedious, but Robert Fagles' translation excels at vigorous language and strong imagery. I was struck by how Homer balanced the rhetoric of bravery/glory with many instances of the epic's heroes being pig-headed, vain and foolish. I was also very taken by the many side-stories and diversions, especially the famous 'epic in miniature' Hephaestus depicts on Achilles' shield, and was fascinated by the ever-strange relations between the mortals and the gods.
