I was struck by how Homer balanced the rhetoric of bravery/glory with many instances of the epic's heroes being pig-headed, vain and foolish. I was also very taken by the many side-stories and diversions, especially the famous 'epic in miniature' Hephaestus depicts on Achilles' shield, and was fascinated by the ever-strange relations between the mortals and the gods. ...more

While epic literature is less accessible today, the Fagles translation does justice to Homer and made the old tale fresh for me.
