This edition is exquisitely illustrated by P.J. Lynch. The language is so rich that I think film versions really don't measure up to actually reading or listening to Dickens words. The illustrator P.J. Lynch did a fabulous job with this story, and enriches the experience tremendously. I didn't realize when I recently bought this that Lynch is Irish, born in Belfast, and living in Dublin. I'm so glad I finally purchased a copy of this and read it at the holidays. The Penguin Christmas Classics edition is very pretty with the cheerful red cardinal on the cover. It takes you a few pages to get into the cadence of Dickens' prose, but then it is just a pleasure to read. I recently watched the Patrick Stewart movie version and I was pleased to have a few of the period mysteries solved by reading the book. ...more

Of course it has its problems, like the preaching tone and that one would become overnight something one has never even had any inclination or interest in, but - it's still scary and touching and lovely. :-D
There are some very nice bits in there, and some ideas of how to form my Christmas parties - I'd really love to have old-fashioned parlour games and so :-D

A Christmas doesn't go by that I don't take an evening, curl up in front of the fire, and reread this Christmas classic. I think that I need a yearly reminder about the true meaning of the season. ...more

Loved the book. First time I actually read the book, of course I watched the movie so many times. I just enjoy this book so much and I am so glad I read the book. Definitely will be rereading it every Christmas.
