I really enjoyed this. I don't usually like novels written in letter format but it seemed to work very well for this story. I finally picked this up after watching Tony Robinson's Walking Through History about the Channel Isles during the five year Nazi Occupation. Thanks to Tony I could see those concrete bunkers & tunnels.
The love story was endearing & timeless, & I loved the character sketches of these indomitable people. I was sorry when it was over.

What a wonderful book. It showed the best and worst in people. I laughed, I was disgusted, I was really moved. A favorite of the year.

This book has made it to one of my all-time favotlrite's list!! I loved it. It is fummy and quirky and like nothing i have ever read. I had received several recommendations to read it but the title always threw me off. I wish i had read it sooner! I think the author is brilliant; the way she can develop characters, a plot, surroundings, themes...all through letters. I recommend this book to all!
