Shelves: fantasy, books-read-in-2023

Let me be completely honest: I fully expected to hate this book.

I wasn't actually going to pick it up, since it seemed very much Not My Thing -- especially since I don't really like dragons! But then my library had the audiobook available randomly and I was like, "what the hell? Why not try it?"

Let me completely honest about a second thing: this isn't a very good book.

The algorithm that shows me fellow readers' choices of reading material seems to have burned me yet again this year with Rebecca Yarros' Fourth Wing. News of it selling out, getting a television option, and hearing so many online readers referring to it as the greatest thing since sliced bread may have put my expectations for this one at a level no book could hope to live up to.

Great fantasy writing!
Spicier than my usual preference but I liked the growth of the main character through her training and the disability representation.

Some parts were really good but others were almost torture. It started out slow. I almost made it a DNF after chapter 3 but I had read such good reviews I had to keep going.
There were way to many lines of her wanting to kiss him and I admit I skimmed through the long drawn out love fest that seemed to go on forever.
I don’t know if I’ll read the next book if it’s another 500 pager.

Absolutely loved this Harry Potter on high octane steroids type book apart from the totally unnecessary three chapters describing the teen sex. That bit was boring, but guess Yarros threw it in to increase her audience. Like I said, just not necessary.
