This is my first Philip K Dick book. That's kind of shocking, because I've been reading science fiction for decades (but somehow I mostly skipped Dick, Heinlein, Bradbury, and Poul). Actually, for years I thought I HAD read this book. Then I saw Blade Runner, and realized I had confused "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" with "Is There Life on a Plastic Planet?" Understandable, right? (Just say "yes.")

I'm a classic sci-fi kind of girl, and this is a classic sci-fi kind of book.
The world has changed into something dramatically different than it is today, and there are androids and electric sheep (ha, surprise) and mood-altering machines. But the story, at its heart (and like lots of great science fiction), is about what it means to be human, and that's what's so appealing about this book. It tackles questions like: "what makes us human?" and "how can we be sure what we're experiencing is real? ...more
