After watching the HBO series, I decided that I had to read the series myself because I found the show so compelling. This isn't the type of book that I'd normally pick up. Fantasy is typically not something that I reach for but I loved the series on HBO and was interested in seeing if the books were even better!

Sooooooo intense, I was more than a little heartbroken for a lot of this book, but when it ended, I found myself looking around for the next book (which I don't have) with hope. I can see now why this series is so popular, and I plan to read the other books now, too.

I haven't watched any of the shows, but thought I would start with the novels first.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. At times I had trouble keeping up with all of the characters initially. However, as I grew to knew each character (even their opposing views of others), I became engrossed in their stories. I often found myself being surprised and excited to begin different chapters/ being taken to a different person, and a totally different conflict in their world.

Great book, which is remarkably faithfully represented by the first season of the HBO TV series. So much so, in fact, that it was difficult for me not to picture the TV episodes as I was reading the novel. Consequently, I have a hard time giving this book a standalone review. I've very excited to read the next installment in the series and delve into some uncharted territory.

I applaud Martin for his imagination. I did find myself preferring the TV show over the book on many occasions. I don't think this has ever happened to me before. In particular, I prefer Tyrion's characterization on the TV show over the book's. Since he is arguably my favorite character, that counts for a lot. It is nice to have more stories and expanded stories about characters as well as more history of Westeros. However, I was anticipating Tolkien caliber writing, and this I did not find. T ...more

I think I see series potential, but I'm not 100% on board yet. Audiobook is well done but perhaps listening affected my "reading" experience, since there were just so many introductions and characters to keep track of. Nevertheless, will get started on the next one, see if the series picks up.
