I get why this book was so highly reviewed, but I just found it so extremely sad. I debated in reading it because I tend to go against the typical, classic literature type books...but the reviews convinced me to give it a shot. Glad I did, though I have to admit to getting a bit bored at times. Kya “Marsh Girl” was so resourceful and adept at taking care of herself and that alone made the story.

Kya (aka: Marsh Girl) raises herself after everyone in the family leaves her. She learns how to read and write and is published as an expert on the Marsh. She's loved two men, one who leaves her to go to collage and one who later winds up dead. She is convicted of the crime and it goes to court. What will the verdict be? You have to read the book to find out. And, there is a twist at the end that I didn't see coming.

I didn’t finish. Not because it’s a bad book…it’s great. The content broke my heart. I’d read about Kya’s awful home life and couldn’t pick it up again for a few days. Books about kids that are neglected and abused… I just cannot take it anymore.
I want to read and escape the garbage in life, not delve deeply into the muck.
