It lost some of its steam towards the end, where the romance aspects became a little much for me, but otherwise - a wonderful book, the best kind of magical realism, which an easily loveable cast of characters. While overflowery and self-indulgent in some places, the overall stories told are fantastic. I was particularly drawn to Bailey's story, and could never put the book down when I hit one of his chapters. ...more

I enjoyed this story and didn't have trouble suspending my belief partly because I have been reading a fair bit of magic realism lately, and I read a fair bit of fantasy in general. So it's fun to to imagine a world where stuff like this happens. I also very much enjoyed Jim Dale's narration of this book, and didn't usually have trouble following who was who. When will I learn that I don't like books about the circus! This book was a chore and I am beside myself with all the high ratings.... Maybe I'm just a crotchety old lady now with no imagination. Back to the drawing board folks... To find a book I might like. Note to self.... If there is magic, illusionists or contortionists in the synopsis, skip it! ...more

I recomment the audiobook for this one. Jim Dale is a fantastic narrator and really brings the book to life. And this book is all about the atmosphere, the descriptions and the characters.
