As this book opens, we meet a man inhabiting a strange, seemingly limitless house filled with mysterious statues and devoid of life except for fish, birds, and a mysterious Other. As the man and the Other seek to uncover the mysteries of the labyrinth, the story grows only odder. How did the man get there? Has he always been there? Is there or was there ever somewhere else to be?

I would never have read this book if it hadn't received so many wonderful responses when it appeared in the Challenge. It seemed strange, almost impenetrable. Was it worth the effort. Several reviews convinced me it was. At first, the repetition of the strange dates which were always in "The Year of the Appearance of the Albatross." It took me so long to let go of reading that.
