5 stars for the first third of the book. It reminded me of Stand By Me in the best way. 3 stars for the second and third acts. It was a weird combo of Maze Runner and Hunger Games. The resolution was nice though.
I don't read horror but I appreciate the non-horror movies that King has written, so this one intrigued me. Gross things and fighting kind of bore me, so that took away from the fantastic parts. There were a few too many characters to get attached to any besides Charlie and Radar. ...more

I’ve read pretty much everything by Stephen King and I think each of them gets better. This fantasy/horror involves a teenager who befriends an old, dying man who shares his secret about another world where there is the possibility to extend life. There turns out to be even more in the other world. The thing I really like about King’s novels is their realistic portrayal of things that would otherwise be unbelievable. If I was given this book, without knowing the name of the author I would never have guessed this was a Stephen King novel. After reading so many of his horror stories, I forget that his stories are not all horror based! This was a fun read and one that I could put down and could come back to read just a snippet or so and jump right back into the other world! So many fun literary references and fairy tale (pun intended) themes.
