The anger from this book oozes like a swollen scab. From the first chapters we see of Harry, he is angry, which makes the reader angry. Then Professor Umbridge is cruel and unjust, which makes me even more angry. None of the other Harry Potters have made me as aggravated as this fifth book. And none of the other Harry Potter books ever made me want to throw the book across the room in frustration.

I appreciate the skill of Rowling that lead to my own boiling rage, but I almost believe a pack of The anger from this book oozes like a swollen scab. I appreciate the skill of Rowling that lead to my own boiling rage, but I almost believe a pack of anti-acids should have been attached to the jacket of the book to help me sleep at night.

After witnessing the rise of Voldemort and being called a liar, who could blame Harry for being a tad edgy with everyone. This was, of course, the first log to my fire of fury. Unfortunately, I also started to get frustrated with Harry since he was taking his anger out on Ron and Hermione. Snapping at and failing to confide in his friends only made his – and my own – frustrations at school worse.

Though I admit to hating Dolores Umbridge, I have to also admit that she may be the best of evil characters I have ever read. The contrast of her sugary sweet exterior that veils her bitter core is what adds to her creepiness. Along with her position of authority and cruel reprimands, it was Umbridge’s character that often put me over the edge, imagining myself ripping the pages of my book for the chance of tearing her evilness apart.

Despite all the frustration, there were lots of good parts in the book that were not captured in the movies (so, it’s a shame that you non-readers missed out). The yelling match, for example, between McGonagel and Umbridge was more fun to read since their anger was, ironically, more visible on the pages than on the big screen. Likewise the emotional turmoil displayed with Professor Trelawney getting bullied by Umbridge moved me like a rocking chair.

With all the upsetting material, what is there to love about the book? Well, I love the emotions that the characters and plot exuded from me. No, I am not a masochist. I am just an admirer of strong writing… even if it does give me heartburn.
