4.5 Stars. I really liked this book, and I would've given it 5 stars, except I wasn't crazy about Lissa for most of the book and Rose is too slutty. (But they both get better as the series goes on.)

Whenever I said that I was reading Vampire Academy I encountered mixed reactions. Abhorrence and excitement. The first group of people were shocked that I would stoop low enough to read one of those "vampire books." The other group had either read the series or had heard good things about it and were eager for my take on the novels. Here's what it is.
These books are jammed with typical vampire stuff. Blood-drinking, not going into the sun, etc. But they're entertaining as hell. I'm not going to ...more

I really thought that the high rating of this series meant that I would at least find it tolerable - but then I should have remembered that plenty of people recommended Twilight, and I thought it was terrible.
VA is better than Twilight, which is damning with faint praise, but it's all I've got! The main character, Rose, is simply not sympathetic in any way. I didn't like being in her head - hey, I was a teenaged girl, and I don't remember that level of obsessing about "hotness." She's also mean, ...more

I thought the book was well written, but started a little slow, i.e. was a confusing at first. I felt like I hadn't read the first book, but checked again and saw this was the first book. Later on it finally made sense. I'm more of traditional "vampire-est", so have vampire protectors and two different kinds of vampires seemed to stretch it a little for me. Overall I enjoyed the read, but I'm not in a hurry to start the second one.

Very quick read, about two hours. I really liked this book and I'm looking forward to continuing the series.
