This being said, this book is meant to be a thriller. The book creates suspense even though there is not much action taking place during the story. Overall, I think that this book was decent and will have a good transition into the next book where we will most likely see more action. Spoilers ahead. This being said, this book is meant to be a thriller. The book creates suspense even though there is not much action taking place during the story. Overall, I think that this book was decent and will have a good transition into the next book where we will most likely see more action. Spoilers ahead. The book immediately gets right into the action as the kids are on their way to school. This massive hailstorm begins and to take shelter from it the two buses head towards a local Greenway. But the bus with the main character, Dean, crashes and flips onto its side. The other bus crashed through the doors of the greenway and unloaded the kids and then went back for the second bus full of kids. While on the bus, we get our first glimpse of everyone’s personalities and what they are capable of. They then get settled in the Greenway and learn about all the natural disasters happening and soon learn about a chemical that was released from NORAD due to this. NORAD is a government chemical plant. This chemical affects people in different ways depending on what blood type they are. They then seal up the Greenway to stay safe from the chemical. From there, they get on schedule and routine around the Greenway until two visitors come to the Greenway. The kids let these two people in, and it ends in a confrontation. They learned that there was an evacuation sight in Denver, so they decided to leave, but Dean and a couple other kids stay because they do not feel it is safe. I believe that Monument 14 was good book because it can drag you into thinking what would you do if you were in that situation. That is why Emmy Laybourne has a good plot set up. However, I do not know whether the part about the chemical affecting people differently based on their blood type is very plausible. I think the effect of people blistering up is something more likely to happen, the other two effects, reproductive failure and turning people into bloodthirsty maniacs. I also believe that as the main character, that Dean should have been doing more than just cooking breakfast. It is almost like Niko should have been the main character because he took control, but he was not considered an overpowering character. The rest of the characters were okay, and the book did a good job at representing all these characters and what might have gone on if this book was real. You also have to think about what the government would be doing in this situation. Would they really only have set up one evacuation site, or would they have sent people in their with the proper equipment to help clear the place out? The ending of the book was great. It had action when they had the confrontation with the visitors and afterwards they decide to leave. This leaves us on a cliffhanger that makes us want to know what will happen. Such as are the kids that left going to make it to Denver? What is going to happen to the kids that stayed at the store? In the end, I would recommend this book because I believe that the second book will contain more action and more detail, rather than just staying in one location the entire time. So this was an average book, boring at some times, but can lead into a very interesting second book. ...more
