I loved this book! I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since it finished, and I first read it shortly after it came out! Meet Mary, a teenage girl who lives in a secluded village in the Forest of Hands and Teeth. She is surrounded by the Unconsecrated-- the dead who have returned and crave human flesh. Mary holds out hope, for a life beyond the forest. Mary's village is led by the Sisterhood-a group of women who devote their life to God and the protection of the village; or so the village thinks. (totally relatable in real life) Mary is isolated from the chose of freedom. The Sisterhood controls marriages, children, death and every other aspect of life. there are even scriptures inscribed into every doorway in the houses. when Mary is forced to join the Sisterhood, she finds herself a chance to escape and find the answers she has been looking for. why did the Return occur? Are the stories her mother told about the ocean true? When the fence is breached and overrun with Unconsecrated, Mary begins a journey, of life or death.

Characters-
Overall I thought the characters were believable. Yes, Mary was annoying but sometimes a good story needs a heroine who doesn't always make the right decisions and makes you want to yell at her. Truthfully Mary, wasn't the character that annoyed me the most. Cass did. She was so annoying especially when she kept wanting Harry to go back to the village with her. I found myself yelling, "You can't go back! Your village is overrun with Unconsecrated!" Travis was my overall favorite character.

Plot-

The story itself was very depressing but well written. It had me intrigued from the first page to the very last. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what Mary had to endure next!

There was alot of action and suspense. A must read! Also read the next books in this trilogy "Dead Tossed Waves" and "The Dark and Hollow Places"- They are also just as good, maby even better! ...more

This was a great book! I found the begining a little slow to start off, but then I kept reading and then before i knew it i couldn't stop reading! But, one thing that bothered me was that nothing good happened to Mary. She loses everything. Her dad, mom, travis, her brother Jed,village ect.. I really was hoping that she would escape the forest WITH her brother. That they would make it to the ocean together! But, no he had to fall into a river of unconsecrated! Really good start to a series, it was a little bit of a no storyline just getting ready for the next book so i cant wait to read the next one!
However, i liked the charactors and the way each of them were given their own feel:)

I loved this book, even though it was so sad. I was on a roller coaster of emotions reading this book! My feelings for Harry were up and down, at first I felt bad for him, then I hated him, and then to feeling bad and hating him. I despised cass, and loved Jacob and Argo, I felt so bad for Jed, and I loved Travis, even though I did get so mad at him. This book made me cry so hard! I felt bad for Mary, but I loved her determination! Cant wait to read the next book! And cant wait for the movie!
