What Members Thought
Another book off my TBR list. I've been fascinated by geishas. I know this is a fiction book and can't be taken for fact. I've seen the criticisms. For one, I thought geishas were like prostitutes which this book also slightly portrays, but is in real life, not the case. An okay book.

Undeniably readable, but just as clearly written by an outsider (both of nationality and gender). Overly 'exotic' and fetishized in language and idioms.
I think too many are led to consider this a more primary window into the life of a Japanese woman by titling it "Memoirs". It is a shame that to some this book will be their sole literary venture to Japan or even the East at large. I would advise everyone who enjoyed this book or is considering reading it to seek out books actually written by Jap ...more
