Although it has been a couple of weeks since I finished the book, I will do my best to review it.

There are some really great messages about love, relationships, and nonconformity. Hurston's attention to detail - from the game of checkers to the carefully selected names - was admirable.

I would say this is between two and three stars, just tipping into three. We had to read this book for AP English this year (it's wonderful, we're celebrating black history month with some diverse writing), and I absolutely loved the plot! The thing is, it was just so difficult for me to read that I can't give it any more than three stars. I'm southern and I hear people talk like this every second of every day, but it was still a challenge for me. ...more
